My brother,
Webster Miller, is a talented still photographer. In April of this year he embarked on a project of creating a short film for the
Reduser 4k Portrait Competition. This was his first film undertaking ever! I was thrilled when he asked if I would help in the making of this film and provide the calligraphy. We brainstormed together and came up with the idea of basing the film around a one line haiku.
(There is a great resource for the practice of the one line haiku here.)
The calligraphy in the film is an italic hand written with a Brause nib and sumi ink.
Please view the film by clicking the picture below.
The Haiku placed as one of the top ten finalists and received special recognition at the Reduser Party. The top 10 films were on display all evening in a venue similar to an art gallery layout. You can learn more about
RED here.
wow. Simply amazing, Jo. (and Webster!)
ReplyDeleteI see a bit of the influence Denis must have had on you here. I think he would be very proud.
Thanks Jane! Yes I have been practicing along with Denis Brown's video. They are a wealth of information and worth every penny. The video combines filming, photography, composition, and calligraphy, a great mixed media combination.
ReplyDeleteTotally wonderful Jo and Webster - I sat mesmerised by the whole experience. Fabulously brave of you to do the lettering Jo, my heart would have been in my mouth and my hands would have ben shaking so much!
ReplyDeleteFiona - there were a few takes of each word to get the correct angle, pacing, and letterforms. That helped tremendously in calming the nerves and warming up to the set. The whole process was a great learning experience. I look forward to the next opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI loved watching this! Thanks so much for sharing it. Your lettering is beautiful and it's inspiring to see you in action :)
ReplyDeleteBridget - thank you for your kind words. It has been quite revealing watching myself write. I guess it's kind of like using video to watch and learn your golf swing. haha. I have been able to see how I can better make the letters and spacing.
ReplyDeleteJo, that was fantastic! So professional and sooooo ZEN! Your lettering, along with everything about the film, was perfection. Thank you for sharing. You have a talented brother...
ReplyDeleteThank you Renee!
